Nurses to Testify at Public Hearings on Future of Daughters of Charity Hospitals

At public hearings being held this week on the sale and transfer of six Daughters of Charity Hospitals, registered nurses will urge Attorney General Kamala Harris to include in any agreement governing the sale, a set of core principles that safeguard patient care and preserve vital services. The nurses will testify at the hearings on behalf of the 1800 RNs that work at four of the six DOC facilities and are affiliated with the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United.

A year ago, Nina Pham awoke with a high temperature and drove herself to the hospital. A few days earlier, the registered nurse had learned that one of her patients at TexasHealthPresbyterian Hospital in Dallas had died from an Ebola infection he had carried from Liberia. Now Nina had it too. But her diagnosis was a shock only to the extent that she was the first person to contract Ebola on United States soil. Otherwise, it should not have surprised anyone.
