Today Nurses #BernieBus Slated for Family Farm Visits, Labor Meet & Greet and LGBT Event
With less than a week to go before the first in the nation vote in Iowa, the National Nurses United’s #BernieBus continues its tour of Iowa today starting with a labor meet and greet with Sen. Bernie Sanders and members of various unions including USW, CWA, APWU and NNU/National Nurses United.
Nurses on the #BernieBus will then visit family farms within a two-hour range of Des Moines to dialogue with farmers affiliated with the CCI Action Fund on issues of mutual concern, including support for Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign, the survival of family farms and opposition to the proposed Bakken pipeline which would transport crude oil in an underground pipeline diagonally across the entire state. In the evening the bus will arrive at the “Talk Bernie to Me-LGBT x Art x Politics” event featuring Jonathan Sadowski, Brendan Hines and Justin Long.

Iowa RN Kris Dixon has been traveling on the #BernieBus for the past week. “I’m really proud of Bernie and the people who are working for Bernie in the state of Iowa,” said Dixon. It is fun to see the young kids coming up getting involved in the political process, kids who are in 9th and 10th grade and aren’t able to vote yet but are out there spreading the word, it is really inspiring.”
“I really think sometimes its easier to sit back and let someone else do it, let someone else work for change but then it might take longer because you’re not involved. It’s really important for the future of your family, and your children and your grandchildren that you get involved, it’s really a satisfying feeling and it’s also important to teach your children about social change and caring for your neighbors. I was raised by a Lutheran minister and a registered nurse and they taught me that we need to teach each other and take care of our neighbors,” said Kris Dixon, RN, one of the nurses traveling through Iowa on the #BernieBus.
