Vigil in Hayward Today, 2:00 p.m.- 4:30 p.m. Nurses Support a Healthy Future for St. Rose Hospital

The Registered Nurses at St. Rose Hospital in Hayward will conduct a candlelight vigil today to protest management's stalling in negotiations for a first contract and refusing to address issues that are fundamental to quality patient care. In December 2012, after several years of mismanagement at St. Rose, the RNs voted to affiliate with the California Nurses Association. Since that time, RNs have actively sought to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement that preserves some of their existing standards, and also improves them so that RNs can provide the best patient care.

Registered nurses will hold candlelight vigils tonight and tomorrow night to protest the firing of two registered nurse whistleblowers by the giant corporate hospital chain Community Health System earlier this week. The vigils will be held tonight outside Fallbrook Community Hospital near San Diego and tomorrow night at Watsonville, Ca. Community Hospital.

Hospital chain CHS defies court orders to end illegal retaliation against RNs in its hospitals nationwide. Registered nurses from hospitals throughout San Diego County are holding a candlelight vigil protest on Thursday evening in support of Veronica Poss, the Fallbrook Hospital nurse who was unjustly fired on Monday by her hospital’s corporate owner, Community Health Systems, (CHS), the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United (CNA/NNU), reported today. The union immediately filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board against Fallbrook for the termination of Poss.

Fed. Judge Orders CHS Ohio Hospital to Bargain With RNs & End Illegal Retaliation for Union Activity

Rare Third Court Order in a Year Against Major Hospital Chain. A U.S. District Court Judge has delivered a sweeping cease and desist injunction requiring Affinity Medical Center of Massillon, Oh to end its lawless behavior in refusing to bargain with its registered nurses and engaging in repeated illegal discipline and harassment of its RNs. The ruling, issued January 22 by U.S. District Court Judge John Adams of the Northern Ohio District, is the third injunction within a year against affiliates of Tennessee-based Community Health Systems, now the nation’s largest hospital chain, for rampant violations of federal labor law.

Nurses Say Kaiser Oakland Is Shortchanging Patients

They say the hospital is understaffed and is releasing patients prematurely to save on costs. Wait times for women in labor have become increasingly long at Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center. That's according to Jenna Dran, a registered nurse in the labor and delivery unit, who said that it's not uncommon for mothers preparing to give birth to spend hours in the waiting room and in triage before they are admitted to their own rooms.

RNs Rally Today at Berkeley Hospital to Protest Cuts

Registered nurses at Sutter’s Alta Bates Summit Medical Center will hold a large protest today to protest what they say are wildly misplaced priorities as the hospital hands out huge pay increases for top executives and sets hospital charges at well beyond their cost while pushing major cuts for patients and registered nurses. Sutter’s East Bay Regional President David Bradley received pay increases of 64 percent, 43 percent and 19 percent the last three years, 2010 through 2012, and now draws a salary of just under $2 million a year, according to Sutter IRS filings.

California 3rd in Nation in High Hospital Charges

Nurses Warn of Ongoing Harm for Patients Needing Care. New data released by the nation’s largest nurses’ organization reveals that California hospitals are among the most costly in the nation, helping fuel a growing scandal of high hospital charges and costs. California ranks third nationally in how high it sets its charges over its costs, with a statewide average charge of 451 percent as a percent of total costs. In other words, the average California hospital charges $451 for every $100 of its total costs. That’s well above the national average of 331 percent.
