While many families are busy in December holiday preparations, a group of registered nurses – including Paolo Montenegro, a Burbank, Ca. resident who works at UCLA Medical Center – are getting ready for their own special gift – heading to the Philippines to provide medical support for those who continue to be affected by aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda.

Federal Official:Hospital Objections to RN Vote for CNA at Big Torrance Hospital are 'Without Merit'

RN victory was biggest single hospital election in years. A hearing officer for the National Labor Relations Board this week recommended the labor board uphold the September vote by registered nurses at a major Los Angeles area hospital, branding hospital objections to the democratic vote as “without merit.” In a hard fought election, the RNs at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance, Ca. voted 279 to 261 to join the to join the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United in what CNA called the biggest U.S. election win for non-union hospital registered nurses in seven years.

Keep Manteca Safe Committee Welcomes “Town Hall on Cuts/Closures at Kaiser-Manteca Medical Center

The seniors and nurses of the Keep Manteca Safe Committee are applauding the announcement by the California Alliance for Retired Americans that the senior advocacy group will host the “Town Hall on Cuts & Closures at Kaiser-Manteca Medical Center” on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 1-3 pm, at the Manteca Transit Center, Moffat Blvd. at S. Main St. “We welcome the opportunity to be heard,” said committee member Jackie Rudy, a resident of the Woodbridge by Del Webb retirement community in Manteca. “These cuts and closures are causing real harm to seniors and people throughout the area.”

Kindred Hospital, Westminster RNs Vote by 81% for CNA

Registered nurses at Kindred Hospital in Westminster voted by 81 percent Wednesday to join the California Nurses Association, the state’s largest organization of RNs. CNA will represent 150 RNs at the Orange County facility, a long term care, rehab hospital which is part of a large, Kentucky-based chain that operates transitional care, nursing homes, rehab and hospice facilities and other healthcare sites.

National Day of Strikes, Pickets, Protests by Community Health Systems RNs in Four States

Registered nurses at seven Community Health Systems hospitals in California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, will hold a national day of action with strikes, pickets, and other solidarity events today Tuesday, December 3. The protests will affect more than 1,400 RNs at the facilities.

Longtime San Francisco registered nurse leader Jane Sandoval will leave from San Francisco International Airport, tonight, the latest in an ongoing deployment by the National Nurses United’s Registered Nurse Response Network which is providing disaster relief in the Philippines following the devastation from Super Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda earlier this month.

Nurses Protest Good Samaritan Hospital Plan to Slash Vital RN Positions and Undermine Patient Safety

Nurses at Good Samaritan Hospital will conduct a candlelight vigil today to alert the public to concerns over proposed cuts to critical hospital staff. The hospital plans to eliminate the position of charge nurse, who is responsible for overseeing the flow of the unit and troubleshooting patient care issues, the California Nurses Association, who represents RNs at the facility, announced today. There are currently 52 charge nurses, who are among the most experienced and seasoned RNs in the unit.

Nurses Protest Eroding Patient Care Standards at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital

Registered Nurses at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital (STCH) will hold a candlelight vigil to protest eroding patient care conditions and management’s unwillingness to take serious action at the bargaining table to rectify those conditions. Safe patient care has been a key focus in contract negotiations between Sutter management and the nurses who voted in March 2012 to affiliate with the California Nurses Association,the state’s largest organization of RNs.

UC RNs Welcome New 4-Year Pact Protecting Retirement Security, Stopping Concession Demands

At a time of increasing employer demands for sweeping concessions on retirement security, especially for public workers, registered nurses working at University of California hospitals and student health centers today welcomed a tentative pact with University officials that secures nurses’ retirement as well as achieving important gains. In addition to rebuffing UC demands for substantial cuts in in pensions and retiree health coverage for RNs – especially a demand for a two-tier proposal with huge cuts in pensions for newly hired RNs – the nurses also won significant improvements, including across the board pay increases of 16 percent over four years, plus up to 8 percent more in longevity steps for most RNs.
