Baystate Franklin Medical Center Nurses Announce Plan to Conduct a One-day Strike Feb. 10

GREENFIELD, Mass — The registered nurses of Baystate Franklin Medical Center (BFMC) have announced their plan to conduct a one-day unfair labor practice strike on Monday, Feb. 10, in direct response to Baystate Health’s illegal declaration of impasse last week in its negotiations for a new contract with the nurses and its plan to implement its last offer, which would eliminate a key nursing standard that serves to protect nurses from working prolonged shifts.

Fifth Team of Registered Nurses Returns from the Philippines

This week the fifth team of registered nurses, part of the Registered Nurse Response Network, are returning from the Philippines after providing basic medical care at a city health clinic in Roxas City, near the northern end of the island of Panay which was in the direct path of the storm. The team includes RNs from New York, Minnesota, Texas, and California. They are among the 3,000 RNs from all 50 states and 19 nations who volunteered in the days after the deadly storm to assist with the relief project for Haiyan/Yolanda.

Hospital chain CHS defies court orders to end illegal retaliation against RNs in its hospitals nationwide. Registered nurses from hospitals throughout San Diego County are holding a candlelight vigil protest on Thursday evening in support of Veronica Poss, the Fallbrook Hospital nurse who was unjustly fired on Monday by her hospital’s corporate owner, Community Health Systems, (CHS), the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United (CNA/NNU), reported today. The union immediately filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board against Fallbrook for the termination of Poss.

Fed. Judge Orders CHS Ohio Hospital to Bargain With RNs & End Illegal Retaliation for Union Activity

Rare Third Court Order in a Year Against Major Hospital Chain. A U.S. District Court Judge has delivered a sweeping cease and desist injunction requiring Affinity Medical Center of Massillon, Oh to end its lawless behavior in refusing to bargain with its registered nurses and engaging in repeated illegal discipline and harassment of its RNs. The ruling, issued January 22 by U.S. District Court Judge John Adams of the Northern Ohio District, is the third injunction within a year against affiliates of Tennessee-based Community Health Systems, now the nation’s largest hospital chain, for rampant violations of federal labor law.

Greenbrier RNs Step up Campaign for Patient Safety

Nurses challenge new CHS/HMA monopoly’s misplaced priorities of high charges, cuts in care. Registered nurses from Greenbrier Valley Medical Center (GVMC), in Ronceverte, W. Va. are stepping up their campaign to make the public aware of their growing concerns about patient safety in their hospital in the wake of a recent merger, the National Nurses Organizing Committee (NNOC) announced today. Community Health Systems’ refusal to address nurses’ widespread concerns about patient safety was the driving force that galvanized GVMC RNs to organize and win representation with the NNOC in August of 2012.

Nurses Say Kaiser Oakland Is Shortchanging Patients

They say the hospital is understaffed and is releasing patients prematurely to save on costs. Wait times for women in labor have become increasingly long at Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center. That's according to Jenna Dran, a registered nurse in the labor and delivery unit, who said that it's not uncommon for mothers preparing to give birth to spend hours in the waiting room and in triage before they are admitted to their own rooms.
