San Bernardino County Nurses To Picket Arrowhead Regional Thursday

RNs protest unsafe patient care conditions, stalled talks. Several hundred San Bernardino County registered nurses from Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC), the county detention centers, juvenile halls, outpatient clinics, and public health programs will hold an informational picket on Thursday, May 1, to call attention to what they view as unsafe conditions for their patients and a lack of response in negotiations by county officials. The California Nurses Association/National Nurses United represents approximately 1,300 RNs in San Bernardino County who have been trying to negotiate an agreement for more than four months with little progress on key issues of patient safety.

Urgently Needed Hospital Workplace Violence Prevention Bill Moves Forward

CA nurses mobilize to win passage into law. Registered nurses applauded the approval of a bill that steps up violence-prevention policies in California hospitals, the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United, who sponsored the bill, announced today. Senate Bill 1299, introduced by Sen. Alex Padilla, was approved in a vote today in the Senate Labor Committee. It next goes to the Senate Health Committee on April 30. The issue gained greater urgency this week due to the stabbings of two registered nurses at two separate Los Angeles-area hospitals.

RNs at Two Appalachian Regional Healthcare Hospitals Set One-day Strike

Registered nurses at two hospitals operated by Appalachian Regional Healthcare, in Kentucky and one in West Virginia, will hold a one-day strike May 1 to protest hospital demands that include what they view as unsafe work loads, the extension of a wage freeze that began in 2011, cuts in health coverage, and other reductions in RN standards.

In Rare NLRB Order Fallbrook Hospital Must Pay Costs of Refusing to Bargain with its Nurses

The latest in a two-year series of rulings against Fallbrook Hospital, owned and operated by the nation’s largest for-profit hospital chain, Community Health Systems, was issued on Monday by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) upholding a judge’s decision that the hospital repeatedly failed to bargain in good faith with California Nurses Association, representing its RNs who voted for CNA in 2012.

UMass Memorial Effort to Cut Services and Staff is Pennywise and Pound Foolish

This morning we learned that UMass Memorial Medical Center has announced yet another round of layoffs and service cuts at its Memorial and University campuses in Worcester. More than 80 registered nurses and as many as 90 other employees will be impacted by the layoff announced today, which includes the closing or reduction in a number of services, including the closing of three OR suites, the closing of an entire medical floor and the elimination of the IV therapy team on the Memorial campus.
