More Than 200,000 Signatures Gathered For Two Ballot Initiatives

CANTON, Mass. — The Massachusetts Nurses Association/National Nurses United announced today that it has collected and submitted for certification more than 200,000 signatures for two ballot initiatives that will dramatically improve patient safety in Massachusetts hospitals, while also ensuring that taxpayer health care dollars are dedicated exclusively for patient care and needed services for all communities.

DC Council Health Committee Hearing Friday on Safe Patient Staffing Bill for DC Hospitals

The Health Committee of the District of Columbia City Council will hold a hearing Friday on proposed legislation to require safer staffing for patients in District of Columbia hospitals. DC nurses and community leaders will be on hand urging the Council to act on a bill, the Patient Protection Act, introduced earlier this year by DC Council Chairman Phil Mendelson with 10 of the 13 council members as co-sponsors.

MountainView Nurses To Hold Candlelight Vigil Over Concern for Eroding Staffing Standards

Neveda--Nurses will hold a candlelight vigil outside MountainView Hospital, Tuesday, Oct. 29 to highlight their concerns with chronic staffing issues and to demand management take action. Tuesday, in preparation for Tuesday’s vigil, nurses are conducting outreach at local shopping centers, telling community members, “As nurses, we want optimal staffing levels so that when you need one of us, we can be there for you.”

On September 18, MNA nurses kicked off the signature campaign to put safe patient limits on the ballot. Packets with petitions and instructions have gone out to all bargaining units. Mankato Nurses Ratify Agreement with Mayo Clinic Health System

(MANKATO) – 470 nurses represented by Minnesota Nurses Association at Mayo Health Systems Clinic have agreed to contract terms that address quality of patient care in the hospital. Five months of negotiations, a nurse force galvanized around patient safety concerns and overwhelming community support all contributed to an agreement that lays a new foundation of nurse input into staffing, scheduling and workload.

Orlando RNs to Shed Light on how Patient Care and Community is Hurt by Recent Cuts

Registered nurses and healthcare workers from throughout Orlando Health’s (OH) eight hospitals will hold a press conference and rally Monday morning to speak about the effects cuts are having on their ability to provide safe patient care, the National Nurses Organizing Committee (NNOC)-Florida announced today. The effects, described in more detail below, range from replacing a “sitter” (assigned to ensure a high-risk patient’s safety) with a technician on a different floor monitoring up to 12 cameras on a screen, to blood pressure cuffs not working.
