Nurses union tells supervisors it has no confidence in management

The nurses union at Ventura County’s public hospitals presented a letter of no confidence in management to the county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday. The nurses are in contract talks with county management. Eight of them spoke at Tuesday’s board meeting, complaining of insufficient staffing, low pay and indifferent management. An additional 40 or so people, including nurses and their families, sat in the audience in support.

U.S. District judge: BCH must negotiate Hospital could be slapped with fines if not compliant

After more than a year-long failure to reach an initial contract, a U.S. District judge has ruled Barstow Community Hospital must bargain with its registered nurses’ representative or potentially face fines. A 10(j) injunction was levied against BCH last week and comes on the heels of a temporary restraining order issued against the hospital June 24. The two sides — Community Health System-backed BCH and the California Nurses Association union — have been at an impasse since the CNA was certified in June of last year as the RN’s exclusive representative for the purposes of collective bargaining.

Sutter Health dealt unfairly with nurses, says federal labor board

A federal administrative law judge with the National Labor Relations Board has ruled that Sutter Health East Bay Region officials engaged in unfair labor practices in its dealings with the California Nurses Association representing about 300 registered nurses at Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch. Kaiser nurses protest at First 5 meeting

Registered nurses from Kaiser Permanente and other advocates showed up at a meeting of the First 5 California commission meeting in Sacramento Thursday to protest appointment of their boss to the group. Kaiser CEO George Halvorson was appointed to the commission by Gov. Jerry Brown in May. At the helm at Kaiser since 2002, he plans to retire at the end of the year. The protesters are members of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United. They showed up at the commission meeting to draw attention to Kaiser’s decision to close a pediatrics unit in Hayward and move patients to a new medical center in Oakland.

Berkeley orders Sutter Health's Alta Bates to file details on community benefits

The Berkeley City Council voted 7-1 Tuesday night to require Sutter Health’s Alta Bates Summit Medical Center to provide an annual report to the council with specific detail on the charity care and community benefits reported on tax returns and the value of these benefits to Berkeley residents. The resolution also includes a provision to schedule a council work session on the topic. The council action follows research on the issues by the Community Health Commission, which raised questions about how the information is reported, the myriad of activities that fall under “community benefit” and how well this offsets the nonprofit health system’s tax-exempt status.
