Gavin Newsom picks up California nurses endorsement

The California Nurses Association, whose support helped Gov. Jerry Brown defeat Republican Meg Whitman in 2010, on Wednesday endorsed Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom to succeed him. The endorsement, though not unexpected, comes unusually early – three years before the 2018 election. It is an indication of Newsom’s appeal to organized labor, and also a challenge facing one of his main rivals, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Minnesota Nurses Association Demand Respect for BLM Protesters and Resolution to Investigation

The Minnesota Nurses Association supports members of the Black Lives Matter movement and their peaceful demonstration of grievances to protest the very real and harmful inequities that continue to be imposed on people of color. Nurses everywhere see how racism results in reduced access to healthcare, poorer health, and threats to basic safety. We urge all departments of the City of Minneapolis to work together to swiftly conclude the investigation behind the death of Jamar Clark and the shootings of BLM protesters to restore calm to the community.

There were walkouts, teach-ins and rallies held at more than 100 college campuses including at UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UC Riverside, UC Irvine and UC San Diego. The national day of action focused on three key demands: tuition-free public education, cancellation of all student debt and $15 per hour campuswide minimum wage at every college in the country.

Contra Costa County nurses to vote on tentative contract

The tentative agreement reached after nearly a year and a half of bargaining would cover more than 900 California Nurses Association registered nurses, public health nurses, "per diem" nurses who don't receive benefits but get a higher base wage than other nurses, and nurse practitioners.

Debate Over Nurse-to-Patient Ratio Hits Legislature

The bill, on which the Public Health Committee held a hearing last week, would mandate statewide the maximum number of patients any one nurse can care for at once. The limit would be different for different units, but in hospital units for which the bills do not specifically set a limit, the maximum patient assignment would be four patients per nurse.

Ebola And Beyond: How Prepared Is Boston For The Next Outbreak?

A year ago, the unthinkable happened. For the first time, a person was diagnosed with Ebola in the United States. A Liberian man, Thomas Eric Duncan, infected two nurses in a Dallas hospital before he died. Nurses across the country were shocked, including Boston Medical Center's Karen Higgins, a nurse for 40 years and co-president of the largest nurses’ union in the country, National Nurses United.
