Texas nurses condemn attorney general’s attacks on Annunciation House

Nurses from El Paso, across Texas, and nationwide stand with Annunciation House. We condemn attacks on this group by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, as well as his attempt to shutter the organization without due process. Nurses, represented by National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United (NNOC/NNU), see this attack as the most recent in a long history of hateful, anti-immigrant policy under Governor Greg Abbott’s administration.

Nurses and NNOC/NNU stand with Annunciation House and Texans across the state who are organizing to resist these hateful policies. We will continue to support organizations like Annunciation House, which provide the necessities to migrants crossing into our great state.

Annunciation House and its volunteers have a long history of welcoming migrants into this country with the love and compassion their faith calls them to provide. For almost 50 years, Annunciation House has been a beacon of light for families fleeing violence and the impacts of global warming. Just in the last year, we’ve seen what failed state immigration policies like Operation Lonestar and SB-4 have done to persecute families risking their lives in hopes of a better future for themselves and their children.

Annunciation House is a 501(c)3 faith-based organization that, for almost 50 years, has been a transitional housing charity for migrants crossing into the U.S. through El Paso. They provide shelter, food, and travel coordination for one of the busiest points of entry in the U.S and are entirely volunteer based.

NNOC/NNU represents hundreds of nurses in the El Paso area, as well as many more in other Texas cities including Austin, Brownsville, and Corpus Cristi. In 2019, NNU’s Registered Nurse Response Network (RNRN) deployed to Annunciation House facilities to provide care.
