Nurses aboard National Nurses United’s Bernie Bus, which has been driving across the U.S., arrived in Cleveland earlier this week—and will be heading to Akron and Kent on Wednesday.

“It was inspiring talking to young voters at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C); they’re so passionate about Bernie,” said Lisa Nguyen, RN, of University Hospital Case Medical Center in Cleveland—after a Tuesday Bernie Bus stop on the Tri-C downtown campus. “Being able to meet young people who were so informed breaks the misconception of millenials not caring about their future.”

The nurses’ get–out-the-vote effort in Ohio will bring them to Kent State University on Wednesday, where they will partner with the Single Payer Action Network to talk to students about healthcare for all, which nurses say dovetails with education for all.

“At our stops across the country, we’re finding that student debt, coupled with the high cost of healthcare, means that people just can’t get ahead. They can’t afford their bills—for education, for healthcare, for things that everyone deserves as a human right,” said Catherine Kennedy, RN.

National Nurses United, with over 185,000 members from all 50 states, is the largest organization of registered nurses in the U.S. and the first union to endorse Sanders, in August last year. Since then, NNU members have been organizing house parties, rallies and phone banks, and mobilizing door-to-door efforts in support of Sanders.

“From Nevada to New Hampshire, from Colorado to South Carolina, nurses have talked to voters and been reminded of the huge gaps in access to healthcare and education, concerns about retirement security, the jobs lost due to unfair trade deals, widespread inequality, and the escalating climate crisis that continue to plague so many communities and families,” said RoseAnn DeMoro, Executive Director of NNU.

“Bernie Sanders and the legions of grassroots activists around the country who have joined him, and spoken out for the themes of this historic campaign will not stop. The political revolution is just beginning,” said DeMoro.
