Nurses to Get Out the Vote for Bernie Sanders in Sarasota

This weekend, registered nurse members of National Nurses United will gather in Sarasota to canvass for the candidate they say best supports nurses' values of caring, compassion and community: Sen. Bernie Sanders.

“Nurses know the devastating impact when people don’t have access to the healthcare they need, when they can’t afford their medications, when their Social Security benefits should be expanded to give them a better quality of life,” said Sarasota RN Anna McGrath. “And all these issues we care about, as nurses, are being championed by Bernie Sanders, who says that access to high quality health care, to a dignified retirement, to education and jobs—are a human right. That’s why we’re heading out to talk to voters, to let them know a vote for Bernie is a vote for nurses’ values.”

National Nurses United is the largest union of nurses in the country, with 186,000 members in 50 states—and was the first national union to endorse Sanders, in August, 2015.

“It is Bernie Sanders who has made expanding health care to everyone through Medicare for all, which is also the best way to solve the crisis of medical debt, a centerpiece of his campaign,” said RoseAnn DeMoro, Executive Director of NNU.

“I’m excited to talk to voters in Sarasota about why nurses support Bernie. It really means a lot to take our advocacy out into the community, to hear what’s happening in people’s lives and to share what we see as a prescription for the issues people are struggling with,” said Jody Davenport, RN, of Sarasota. “I truly believe that Bernie Sanders is the right candidate to heal this country.”
