Nurses, Community Rally for Bernie at Early Voting Action

The #BernieBus continues tour through the Sunshine State

On Saturday at 3 p.m., registered nurses and the #BernieBus will join local group FeelTheBern SRQ and other community members at Payne Park in Sarasota to rally for the candidate they say best supports nurses' values of caring, compassion and community: Sen. Bernie Sanders.

After the rally, which will feature speakers and special performances, RNs and local voters will head to the Sarasota Supervisor of Elections office to take part in early voting.

“As nurses, we know that so many of our patients are struggling to access the healthcare they need and deserve,” said Sarasota RN Dawn Edwards. “It’s not uncommon to see patients who have to choose between paying for expensive medications or covering other bills, especially when they are on Social Security or otherwise have limited budgets. Bernie is calling for Medicare for all, not as a privilege but as a right of all people, and nurses really resonate with that.”

Nurses have been touring the country, since January in their big, red #BernieBus, using it as a mobile voter education vehicle. So far, they have traveled through Iowa, Nevada, South Carolina, Texas, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Colorado, and Missouri -- and have plans for many more.

National Nurses United is the largest union of nurses in the country, with 186,000 members in 50 states—and was the first national union to endorse Sanders, in August, 2015.

“It is Bernie Sanders who has made expanding health care to everyone through Medicare for all, which is also the best way to solve the crisis of medical debt, a centerpiece of his campaign,” said RoseAnn DeMoro, Executive Director of NNU. â€¨â€¨“I can’t wait to cast my ballot for Bernie,” said Geniece Hunt, RN, also of Sarasota. “I’ve been looking forward to this day, and we really hope other voters will come out and ‘Feel the Bern’ with the nurses and the community—because we know the people’s revolution championed by Bernie can heal this country.”
