Press Release
#BernieBus to Visit Purchase, Lehmann Colleges
Registered nurses aboard National Nurses United (NNU)'s #BernieBus will travel to Westchester and the Bronx, New York, Friday, to meet with local residents, students, and fellow nurses about the issues impacting their lives.
“I'm a native New Yorker, from the projects on the Lower East Side, and if it weren't for free college, I would never have gotten my Bachelors degree,” said Lilybeth Segarra, an RN based in Chicago. “One of my children has just finished a Masters in Nursing Practice, and another is an undergrad, also studying nursing, and they're so worried about how they're going to pay down their debt. I support Senator Sanders because we need to tax Wall Street speculation to give every young person the opportunity to get a high quality education without going into debt.”
The #BernieBus will make the following stops on Friday, April 15th, 2016:
- Morning – Purchase College
- Afternoon – Lehman College
Please contact MaryAnne Henke, 916-869-5517 or Jesse Myerson, 914-582-3938 for more information on connecting with the bus.
National Nurses United, with over 185,000 members from all 50 states, is the largest organization of registered nurses in the U.S. and the first union to endorse Sanders, in August last year. Since then, NNU members have been organizing house parties, rallies and phone banks, and mobilizing door-to-door efforts in support of Sanders.
“From Nevada to New Hampshire, from Colorado to South Carolina, RNs have talked to voters and been reminded of the huge gaps in access to healthcare and education, concerns about retirement security, the jobs lost due to unfair trade deals, widespread inequality, and the escalating climate crisis,” said RoseAnn DeMoro, NNU Executive Director. “Bernie Sanders and the legions of Grassroots activists around the U.S. who have joined him will not stop. The political revolution is just beginning.”
