#BernieBus Nurses to Visit Buffalo Students, RNs, Voters Friday
Registered nurses aboard National Nurses United (NNU)’s #BernieBus will head to Buffalo, NY on Friday to meet with University at Buffalo students, with registered nurses at Erie County Medical Center, and with local residents at City Hall—to talk about the issues championed by Bernie Sanders, and to hear about the particular struggles Buffalo voters are facing.
“Bernie Sanders’ campaign really resonates with people in Erie County,” said Buffalo RN Bonita Reid, who will be joining the #BernieBus on Friday. “According to the County’s recent community health assessment, 25 percent of local women don’t receive any prenatal care. When you look at families with children under 5, over 22 percent are living below the poverty level. People here are struggling—families are struggling—and they want access to healthcare for all, education for themselves and their children; they want good jobs. Bernie is the candidate who is really speaking truth to power to create the kind of meaningful change we need in Erie County, and in the country as a whole.”
The nurses’ arrival in Buffalo is the latest stop on a #BernieBus tour that has taken nurses across the country, talking to voters from Wisconsin and Indiana to Nevada and Iowa.
“You know that refrain from nurses: ‘Tell us where it hurts.’ It’s such a major part of our job to assess what’s wrong—to listen to where people are feeling pain,” said #BernieBus RN Jean Ross, co-president of NNU. “We’ve heard stories all across the country by now, of people struggling with the results of disastrous trade deals, with being uninsured or under-insured and unable to afford their co-pays and deductibles. Nurses know Bernie Sanders is the right candidate to heal this country, and we are looking forward to speaking with the people of Buffalo about how to really ensure that they have a ‘future to believe in.’”

National Nurses United, with over 185,000 members from all 50 states, is the largest organization of registered nurses in the U.S. and the first union to endorse Sanders, in August last year. Since then, NNU members have been organizing house parties, rallies and phone banks, and mobilizing door-to-door efforts in support of Sanders.
“From Nevada to New Hampshire, from Colorado to South Carolina, RNs have talked to voters and been reminded of the huge gaps in access to healthcare and education, concerns about retirement security, the jobs lost due to unfair trade deals, widespread inequality, and the escalating climate crisis,” said RoseAnn DeMoro, NNU Executive Director. “Bernie Sanders and the legions of grassroots activists around the U.S. who have joined him will not stop. The political revolution is just beginning.”
