In-House Legal Counsel

The California Nurses Association/National Nurses United, the largest labor union and professional association representing Registered Nurses in the U.S., seeks to add an experienced attorney with a demonstrated commitment to the labor movement to its in-house Legal Department at CNA/NNU Headquarters in Oakland, California. 

This role will combine duties of Compliance Counsel with a traditional labor law practice and will perform legal work on a variety of matters that may include:

  • Representing the Union in a variety of areas including NLRB and state employment relations board work, state and federal litigation, arbitrations, drafting legislation, advising union staff, and active involvement in creative, fast-paced organizing on an array of important social justice campaigns;
  • Advising Union on campaign finance reporting and registration requirements in electoral and advocacy campaigns, and in lobbying, including managing day-to-day activities of Union’s political action committees; 
  • Serving as lead counsel on internal governance matters, including overseeing officer elections and conventions;
  • Counseling Union on LMRDA and fiduciary obligations; and 
  • Advising Union on broad spectrum of compliance matters, including non-profit, labor, tax, contracts, and intellectual property.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A demonstrated commitment to labor unions and to the core mission of the organization.
  • Juris Doctor and membership in the CA state bar.
  • 5+ years of legal experience, including at least 1 year of compliance work.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, writing, proofreading and organizational skills.
  • Must be detail-oriented and possess good follow-through.
  • Excellent legal research, analysis, and writing skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple actions simultaneously under changing conditions and critical time constraints

Salary range: $122,684 to $199,841. Excellent benefits including full family health insurance, defined benefit pension plan, and generous vacation time.
