The California Nurses Association will offer free health screenings in Santa Ana Wednesday afternoon as part of a 3-week, statewide bus tour to advocate for expanding Medicare to cover all Americans.

The union’s campaign comes as the Supreme Court is poised to rule on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, which requires all Americans to eventually purchase health insurance.

“We’re trying to build  momentum, build a movement based on whatever happens with the Supreme Court ruling,” said spokeswoman Liz Jacobs.

The nurses will offer health screenings from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Delhi Community Center, including blood pressure and glucose readings. The center is located at 505 E. Central Ave.

Afterward, a town hall meeting will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the center. Participants will be invited to share their experiences with health care. The union supports eliminating private insurance and expanding Medicare to cover everyone.

Jacobs said Tuesday night that more than 100 people attended the tour’s kick off event in San Diego. The tour ends July 12 in West Covina.

Jacobs said regardless of what the Supreme Court decides, the union says the Affordable Care Act doesn’t do enough to cover all Americans in a cost-efficient way.

“Whether it strikes down all of it or upholds part of it, the nurses have embarked upon really pushing for a solution,” she said. “Our health care crisis is far from over.”
