CHS, National Labor Relations Board Head to Court

Franklin-based Community Health Systems is in court in Ohio this week, facing a consolidated complaint from the National Labor Relations Board about alleged labor violations at several of its hospitals.

The trial, which began Monday, is the result of an October complaint from the NLRB listing 29 charges against the company concerning " unfair labor practices" at several of its hospitals. Including as-yet-unscheduled hearings at locations near hospitals with alleged violations, the trial is expected to last several months, said Martha Wallner, a spokeswoman for nurses' union National Nurses United.

Labor issues are not an unfamiliar battle for CHS, which has faced pushback from NNU in particular several times. A CHS spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It's a busy time for CHS, still the largest for-profit hospital operator by hospital count. The company is coming off a challenging 2015 and pursuing the spinout of nearly 40 hospitals and its business-consulting subsidiary, a move that has been delayed slightly because of market conditions.
