Social Justice Educator
WHO WE ARE
National Nurses United’s Social Justice and Equity Division (SJE):
California Nurses Association/National Nurses United is the largest labor union and professional association of registered nurses in U.S. History, with a membership of approximately 225,000. The SJE division works to build the collective power of union nurses to fight for racial, gender, and health justice in their workplaces and communities.
Through political education, leadership development, and resource development, this position works to support the social justice goals at every level of our union’s work. We strive toward building a more just and inclusive multi-racial, gender inclusive, feminist working people’s democracy in which access to a safe and healthy world is understood as a public good and provided as a fundamental right.
Position: This is a permanent full-time position based in the San Francisco Bay Area. This position is best suited for a skilled political educator with experience working with unions and/or social movement organizations to build working-class power and advance struggles for social justice. Familiarity with popular education methods, experience developing educational resources, and strong facilitation skills are highly desirable. This position works collaboratively with other members of the SJE team and other NNU staff and members, and also requires an ability to work independently when developing workshops, resources, and other materials to support our union’s mission.
Desired Skills and Experience: We are growing a team that values building union power and working-class solidarity through collective fights for racial and gender justice. This position requires strong communication skills, including an ability to discuss the historical and structural causes of social inequity in accessible terms. We are looking for people who have practical experience facilitating political education trainings and an understanding of the changing social justice landscape.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ROLE
- A college degree (advanced degree preferred) in a relevant discipline and/or commensurate trade union or social movement experience
- A minimum of two years’ experience successfully working with a labor union or community-based organization
- Strong capacity to craft political education curriculum and educational resources
- Expertise in leading dynamic and engaging trainings for a variety of audiences
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to balance multiple short-term and long-term projects
- Ability to consistently deliver core programming while adapting to evolving needs of a large organization
- Proficiency in working collaboratively and independently
- A valid driver’s license and ability to travel
ADDITIONAL & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Familiarity with and/or experience working with domestic and global working class/anti-racist/feminist movements
- Understanding of human and civil rights history and frameworks in the U.S.
- Advanced skills in facilitating effective meetings
- Planning and coordination of educational public events

Salary and Benefits: Competitive salary depending on experience $110,088 to $188,796, and outstanding benefits offered, including comprehensive family health & dental plan, and generous pension.
