Welcome to the California Nurses Foundation

The California Nurses Foundation (CNF) is an independent non-profit organization, founded in 1971 by the California Nurses Association. It is dedicated to charitable, scientific, and educational endeavors designed to (1) encourage, support and enhance the professional practice of Registered Nurses, (2) advance science and education for RNs, other health care workers and the general public and (3) maintain and improve the quality of nursing care for all.

National Nurses United and the Registered Nurse Response Network (RNRN) work to send nurses to disaster stricken areas both inside the U.S. and internationally. Please visit the secure donation form and share it with friends to ensure that RNs are there to help when needed most.

About the RN Response Network (RNRN):

The Registered Nurse Response Network (RNRN), a project of the California Nurses Foundation and the nearly 225,000-member National Nurses United, works to send nurses and/or equipment to disaster-stricken areas both inside the U.S. and internationally where and when they are needed most. RNRN was formed in 2004 in the aftermath of the South Asia tsunami, when the need for nurses was not being met by traditional disaster relief organizations. Since that time RNRN has sent hundreds of direct-care nurse volunteers or supplies to assist following:

  • Hurricane Katrina
  • The massive earthquake in Haiti
  • Typhoon Haiyan
  • 2014 Ebola epidemic in West Africa
  • Hurricanes Harvey, Maria and Michael
  • Camp Fire (Butte County, CA)
  • Hurricane Dorian

CNA/NNOC Scholarships

Through the CNF program, CNA-NNOC offers scholarship awards each year to students enrolled in Associate Degree of Nursing programs to obtain their first RN credential, as well as to nurses engaged in BSN/MSN or continuing education courses. For more information and to apply for the current scholarship cycle, visit our scholarship page here. Applications are due each summer, and funds to all awardees are distributed in the fall.

CNF Mission statement:

  1. advance education and science for registered nurses, other health workers, and members of the public through distribution of funds for programs to increase public and professional knowledge of nursing.
  2. provide an organization for individuals and groups dedicated to the support of professional nursing.
  3. provide a mechanism to solicit, receive and make donations, financial and other, to the profession of nursing.
  4. support and assist the profession of nursing in maintaining and improving the quality of its service to the public.
  5. encourage recruitment of qualified persons into the nursing profession and aid support development of continuing educational programs for registered nurses.
  6. establish and provide the means for publication of books, pamphlets, brochures, monographs, articles and other printed or audiovisual materials to assist nurses, patients, and others to render or obtain better nursing care.

CNF Values:

  2. Nurses have a unique role and competency in all leadership issues related to patient care. The nurse maintains competency in nursing and assumes accountability for individual nursing judgments and actions.
  3. Nurses have a legal and moral responsibility to patient advocacy. In the words of the Florence Nightingale pledge, " I will devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care".
  4. The nurse acts to safeguard the patient and the public when healthcare and safety are affectd by the incompetent, unethical, illegal, or inappropriate practice of any person.
  5. Registered nurses are supported in their advancement and development regardless of their academic preparation.
  6. Nurse leadership and/or participation are essential in any program or project that impacts nurses' practice, work environment, or conditions of employment.
  7. As a professional, nurses have a responsibility and right to develop nursing standards and maintain them at their highest level.
  8. The nurse provides services with respect for human dignity and the uniqueness of the patient unrestricted by considerations of social or economic status, nature of health problems, age, color, creed, disability, gender, lifestyle, nationality, race, religion, or sexual orientation.
  9. The nurse participates in the profession's effort to protect the public from misinformation and misrepresentation and to maintain the integrity of nursing.
  10. Nurses value collaboration between nursing, other health professionals and workers, and the public in protecting and promoting human rights related to accessibility and quality of healthcare.
